The community of South Bend, Indiana is mourning the death of Jean Gragg, whose courageous final act to protect her son ended in tragedy. The 40-year-old devoted mother died after being shot during a violent Facebook Marketplace robbery. Authorities have charged John Harrison Ford, 18, with murder and robbery in connection with the fatal shooting.
According to investigators, Jean’s son had arranged to sell a watch to Ford through Facebook Marketplace. Police say the meeting turned violent when Ford allegedly pulled out a handgun and attempted to steal the watch. Jean immediately stepped between the suspect and her son before chasing Ford away from the property. Surveillance video reportedly shows Ford turning back and firing multiple shots as Jean headed toward the house, striking her in the head. She was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent intensive treatment before being declared brain-dead and later removed from life support.
Loved ones remember Jean as a compassionate, funny, and fiercely devoted mother who was raising her son on her own. A GoFundMe created in her memory described her 
as someone with a “hilarious attitude and sassy personality” who adored her son and her beloved cat more than anything. Her selfless actions in protecting her child have been widely recognized as an extraordinary act of courage.
